Ministry Initiative on Fisheries Technology Transfer:

  • The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying has initiated discussions to strengthen technology transfer in the fisheries sector through the ICAR Fisheries Extension Network.
  • This network, overseen by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), is focused on implementing innovative and sustainable practices in fisheries, aiming to deliver practical knowledge directly to field operators.

Role of ICAR in Agricultural Development:

  • ICAR, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, was founded as the Imperial Council of Agricultural Research on 16 July 1929.
  • Headquartered in New Delhi, ICAR is one of the world’s largest agricultural systems, coordinating research in agriculture, horticulture, animal sciences, and fisheries through 113 institutes and 74 agricultural universities across India.
  • The Union Minister of Agriculture is the President of ICAR, while the Director-General serves as both Principal Executive Officer and Secretary to the Government of India in the Department of Agricultural Research and Education.

Fisheries Extension Network: Enhancing Productivity

  • The Fisheries Extension Network is designed to directly connect advanced research and innovative solutions with fishers, promoting sustainable practices and boosting productivity in the fisheries sector.
  • By bridging the gap between scientific research and field application, ICAR’s initiatives aim to ensure that fishers have access to the latest advancements, benefiting both their livelihoods and the broader fisheries sector.
