CRITICISM OVER KARNATAKA’S MUSLIM CATEGORIZATION AS BACKWARD CASTE.
Why in the news?
Karnataka’s blanket categorization of Muslims as backward caste for reservation criticised by National Commission for Backward Classes.
Criticism of Karnataka’s Muslim Categorization:
- NCBC Criticism: The National Commission for Backward Classes
- (NCBC) condemned Karnataka’s decision to categorise the entire Muslim community as a backward caste for reservation purposes.
- Blanket Categorization: Karnataka’s Backward Classes Welfare Department listed all castes and communities within the Muslim religion as socially and educationally backward under Category IIB in the State List of Backward Classes.
- Undermining Social Justice: NCBC stated that this blanket categorization undermines the principles of social justice, especially for marginalised Muslim castes and communities. While acknowledging underprivileged sections within the Muslim community, NCBC emphasised the need for a nuanced approach considering the diversity and complexities within Muslim society.
