  • The 54th annual meeting of the World Economic Forum began in Davos amid growing concerns about global conflicts, climate change, and deepfakes.
  • The conference’s theme, “Rebuilding Trust,” highlights the importance of investigating the opportunities made possible by emerging technologies and how they may affect international cooperation and decision-making.
  • The conference will be taking place from 16th Jan, 2024.
  • Amid growing concerns among world leaders over climate change, conflicts, and misinformation, yesterday’s opening concert was dedicated to the Sahara desert and Amazon rainforest.
  • Three artists—guitarist Nile Rodgers, actress Michelle Yeoh, and architect Diebedo Francis Kere—were given annual Crystal Awards.
  • As the bridge-builders, the WEF described them as bridging gaps, fostering introspection about humanity, and offering perspectives on the world that transcend the confines of linear or temporal thinking.

Sahara Desert

What exactly constitutes a desert?

  • A desert is an area or landscape with less than 250 mm (roughly ten inches) of annual precipitation.
  • Approximately one-third of the land area on Earth is made up of deserts.
  • Five categories can be used to categorize deserts according to how dry they are: subtropical, coastal, rain shadow, interior, and polar.

About Sahara Desert

  • Africa continent is home to the Sahara desert, which stretches over numerous Northern African nations. Cold Antarctica and Arctic deserts are bigger in size than the Sahara desert and it the world’s largest hot desert and the highest temperature ever measured was 58 degrees Celsius.
  • The Sahara desert covers 10 different countries: Algeria, Chad, Egypt, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Western Sahara, Sudan, and Tunisia.
  • The Sahara desert is made up of sand dunes, rocky plateaus, mountains, salt flats, and dry valleys and it contains 20 lakes, nearly all of which are saltwater bodies of water. Lake Chad is the only freshwater lake in the Sahara desert.
  • There is less than one inch of annual precipitation in the Sahara desert.
  • It is home to several deeply carved mountains formed by volcanic eruptions. The highest peak in the Sahara desert is Emi Koussi, which is located in the Tibesti range in Northern Chad.
  • The Sahara desert makes up about 8% of the planet’s surface and 31% of Africa is made up of the Sahara desert.

Amazon Rainforest

About Amazon Rainforest

  • These vast tropical rainforests, which span 6,000,000 square kilometers, are found in the northern South American drainage basin of the Amazon River and its tributaries.
  • Grown within 28 degrees north or south of the equator, tropical forests are closed-canopy forests.
  • These are extremely moist areas, with annual rainfall of over 200 cm, either seasonal or continuous and the temperature ranges from 20°C to 35°C, which is consistently high.
  • These types of forests can be found in many Pacific Islands, South America, Central America, Africa, Australia, and Mexico.
  • Geographical boundary: It is bordered to the north by the Guiana Highlands, to the west by the Andes Mountains, to the south by the Brazilian central plateau, and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean. It makes up around 40% of all of Brazil.
  • NOTE: A World Wildlife Fund (WWF) report titled “Living Amazon Report” 2022 states that about 35% of the rainforest has either completely disappeared or is severely degraded.
