- S. Jaishankar, the minister of external affairs, will visit Nepal for two days starting on Jan 04, 2024.
- Narayan Prakash Saud, the foreign minister of Nepal, invited the visit in order to co-chair the 7th India-Nepal Joint Commission meeting in Kathmandu.
- The Joint Commission, which was founded in 1987, gives the two Ministers a forum to examine every facet of their bilateral cooperation.
- The visit is in keeping with the tradition of high-level exchanges between two close and friendly neighbors and for India, Nepal is a priority partner under its Neighbourhood First policy.
India – Nepal relations
- Nepal is a significant neighbor of India and holds a unique place in its foreign policy because of the centuries-old geographic, historical, cultural, and economic ties.
- Hinduism and Buddhism are closely related in India and Nepal, as Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha, is situated in modern-day Nepal.
- In addition to having an open border and unrestricted travel, the two nations are also closely linked by marriage and family ties, a phenomenon known as Roti-Beti ka Rishta.
- The cornerstone of the unique relationship between India and Nepal is the 1950 Treaty of Peace and Friendship between the two countries (post-independence).
- Nepal is bordered by West Bengal, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar in India and therefore, a crucial aspect of cultural and economic interchange.
- There are two ways to approach the analysis of the significance for India:
- Their strategic significance for the security of India and their position in the perception of India’s role in world politics.
- Located precisely in the center of India’s “Himalayan frontiers,” Nepal, along with Bhutan, serves as a northern “borderland” flank and a buffer state in case China decides to invade.
- Both ecologically and hydropower-wise, rivers that originate in Nepal supply the perennial river systems of India.
- Since Nepal is home to numerous Buddhist and Hindu holy sites, it is a popular destination for Indian pilgrims.
