FIPIC Summit, 2023
News: On the sidelines of the FIPIC Summit in Papua New Guinea, the Prime Minister of India meets with the leaders of Pacific Island countries.
Today’s FIPIC Summit, the third meeting for cooperation among the islands of the Indo-Pacific, was co-hosted by Papua New Guinea.
The summit was co-chaired by the prime ministers of India and Papua New Guinea.
The topics of discussion included trade, technology, healthcare, and climate change, among other areas of collaboration.
A global organisation promoting cooperation between India and 14 Pacific Island countries is known as the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC).
Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Niue, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu are among the 14 islands that are included in it.
All In Suva, Fiji, in November 2014, the heads of state or governments of the aforementioned nations came together for the first time, conceptualising the annual summit.
A significant effort to increase India’s involvement in the Pacific area has been made through the FIPIC programme.
India’s connection with these nations is largely through South-South Cooperation’s development assistance, primarily in the form of capacity building and community development initiatives.
