Zojila Pass
News: Recently, the crucial Zojila Pass, which serves as a gateway between the union regions of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir, was reopened by the Border Roads Organization (BRO).
Zojila Pass, popularly referred to as “The Mountain Pass of Blizzards,” is a vital route that connects Ladakh and Kashmir Valley.
It is situated 11,650 feet above sea level on the NH-1 Srinagar-Kargil-Leh highway.
Due to a lot of snowfall, the pass is closed for about half the year.
The 1947–1948 Indo–Pakistan War took place there.
In 1848, it was taken by militias assisted by the Pakistani Army with the intention of taking Ladakh.
The Indian Army did, however, successfully take the pass on November 1st, 1948, during an attack known as Operation Bison.
In the Srinagar-Leh Highway in Jammu and Kashmir, at an elevation of 11,578 feet (about 3,500 metres), lies a tunnel that is still under construction called the Zojila Tunnel.
With a total length of 14.15 kilometres, the tunnel would offer all-weather connection between Srinagar and Leh.
