Z-Morh Tunnel: Key Infrastructure for Strategic Connectivity
Why in the news?
Militants attacked a campsite near the Z-Morh tunnel construction site, emphasising its significance for troop movement and connectivity between Srinagar and Ladakh amid ongoing regional tensions.
About the Z-Morh Tunnel:
- The Z-Morh tunnel, a 4 km long infrastructure project, connects Kangan to Sonmarg in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.
- Located near Gagangir village, approximately 10 km from Sonmarg, the tunnel is named after the Z-shaped road at its construction site.
- It is part of the larger Zojila tunnel project, aimed at ensuring all-weather connectivity between Srinagar, Drass, Kargil, and Leh on National Highway-1 (NH-1).
Strategic Importance:
- The Z-Morh tunnel is crucial as it bypasses the 8,500-feet-high road stretch that remains closed during winters due to snowfall and avalanches.
- The Srinagar-Leh highway (NH-1) and the Manali-Leh highway (NH-3) are the only two routes connecting Ladakh to the rest of India, both of which are often shut during winter.
- Ladakh holds immense strategic importance for India, especially with troop deployments against Pakistan in Siachen Glacier and Turtuk sector, and against China in Eastern Ladakh post-2020 Galwan clashes.
- The Zojila and Z-Morh tunnels will enable year-round transport of troops and supplies, reducing reliance on expensive air transport.
