Z-Morh Tunnel
News: According to the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, the vital Z-Morh tunnel will soon be dedicated.
On the Srinagar-Leh Highway in Jammu and Kashmir, the Z-Morh Tunnel, a two-lane road tunnel, is currently being built between Gagangir and Sonamarg.
The road’s Z-shaped section between Sonamarg and Gagangir, which the tunnel will replace, inspired its moniker.
Distance: 6.5 km
The tunnel is intended to carry 1,000 cars per hour at a permitted top speed of 80 km/h.
Sonmarg, a popular tourist destination at 8,960 feet, is buried under snow during the winter, causing locals to relocate to Srinagar.
Sonmarg town in Jammu and Kashmir will be connected, and supplies will be kept year-round, thanks to the Z-Morh tunnel.
Between Kargil in Ladakh and Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir, it will guarantee all-weather communication.
It seeks to improve Indian military capabilities in Kashmir and Ladakh along the Line of Control (LOC) to the north and the Line of Actual Control (LAC) further east, along with the 14.15 km Zojila Tunnel to its east.
