Young Professionals Scheme

News: The governments of India and the U.K. launched the Young Professionals Scheme, allowing up to 3,000 of their degree-holding citizens between the ages of 18 and 30 to live and work in each other’s nations for a period of two years.

Young Professionals Schemes

  • Young Indians and Britons have a special opportunity to broaden their cultural views and gain worldwide experience through the Young Professionals Scheme. It may also promote cultural exchange and the development of professional networks, which could deepen ties between the two nations.
  • The selected candidates may choose to stay in their host nation for the two years or look for employment, educational, or cultural opportunities there. Up to 3,000 people may receive exchange visas each year under the plan. Candidates do not need to have a job lined up before applying for the visa.
  • The Young Professionals Scheme was introduced as discussions for a free trade agreement between the two nations were still ongoing. These negotiations were made difficult by concerns about the free flow of people across borders. As part of the trade negotiations, the UK has also asked for more flexibility in the migration of students and professionals with certain skills from India to the UK.
  • Beginning in early 2023, this plan will be put into effect on a reciprocal basis. As decided in 2021, it will improve the Mobility Partnership and Migration between the nations.
  • India is the first nation with a visa system to benefit from this scheme. In the midst of the severe labor shortages in the nation, the UK launched it to cater to the pertaining issues.

India- United Kingdom

  • In the UK, India is the second-largest foreign investor. As an investor in India, the UK is ranked third after Singapore and Mauritius and 18th as a trading partner of India. There are numerous bilateral economic agreements between the two countries aimed at fostering relations.
  • The expansion of Indian multinational corporations has a significant impact on UK business and the economy. In the UK, Indian businesses produced about 48 billion pounds as of 2019. More than 105,000 individuals have been hired by them in the UK as well. Over 63,760 individuals were employed in the UK by the Tata Group alone.
