World Hydrography Day 2023

News: On the eve of World Hydrography Day, the Union Defence Minister paid a visit to the hydrography ship South Jetty at the Indian Naval station Kochi to support the sustainable use of the oceans.

World Hydrography Day is observed on June 21 every year.

The International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) formally acknowledges and endorses it.

It acts as a forum for highlighting the important work done by hydrographers around the world and for promoting the importance of hydrography in general.

It strives to raise public knowledge of and comprehension of how hydrography contributes to the development of coastal zones, safe and effective navigation, and sustainable management of marine resources.

2023 “Hydrography – supporting the digital twin of the ocean” is the theme.

Hydrography:

It is the domain of applied sciences that deals with the measurement, description, and forecasting of the physical characteristics of oceans, seas, coastal regions, lakes, and rivers.

The main tools used for this are specialised ships and boats equipped with echo sounders and sonars, but laser-equipped survey planes are also used.

Sometimes data from satellite observations can be used to derive useful information.

Measuring the tide and currents is part of the process of hydrography.

In contrast to oceanography, hydrography will take into account both natural and artificial shore features, lights, and towers that help pinpoint a ship’s position, as well as the physical characteristics of the sea and seabed.

Making nautical charts, which are used by all mariners for navigation, is the most well-known use of hydrographic data.

Every human activity that occurs in, on, or under the sea must be conducted in a safe, effective, and sustainable manner.
