- The Indian Air Force will hold the mega exercise Vayu Shakti 2024 on the Pokharan Range in Jaisalmer on the 17th February, 2024.
About the Exercise
- The Air Force will focus on interoperability and maneuvering to showcase its air fighting and operational capabilities during the exercise;
- Air Marshal A P Singh told the New Delhi media that over 100 aircraft and helicopters will take part in Vayu Shakti in 2024 and also that the exercise will feature several domestically built and designed aircraft and helicopters, including Tejas, Prachand, and Dhruv;
- Singh added, “Fire power will also be demonstrated by air-to-air and surface-to-air missile systems, such as MICA, R-73, SAMAR, and Akash”;
- The Indian Air Force reports that 41 helicopters, including MI-17, Apache, and C130, five transport aircraft, including C130 and C17, and 77 fighter aircraft, including Rafale, Jaguar, Mirage 2000, and Sukhoi 30 MKI, will take part in the Vayu Shakti 2024;
- About Vayu Shakti: A triennial exercise takes place once every three years. The objective is to demonstrate the IAF’s capacity to carry out full spectrum operations (day and night), with the participation of transport aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles, and aircraft and helicopters.

- History of IAF:
- The Indian Air Force, also known as the Bharatiya Vayu Sena, was first formed as a supplementary air force under the British Royal Air Force and in recognition of India’s aviation contribution during World War II, the Air Force was granted the title Royal;
- Till India attained dominion status, the Royal Airforce was known by that name. The prefix Royal was dropped in 1950 when the government became a republic;
- Chief of IAF: The Indian President is the IAF’s supreme commander, also known as its commander-in-chief and the Chief of Air Staff, a four-star officer and air chief marshal, is in charge of the Air Force’s operations;
- Motto of IAF: The Bhagavad Gita is the source of the IAF’s motto, “Nabhah Sparhsam Diptam,” which translates to “Touch the sky with glory”;
- Operations of IAF:
- The Indian Air Force has fought four wars against Pakistan since 1950 and they have also contributed significantly to other significant operations such as Operations Meghdoot, Cactus, Vijay, and Poomalai;
- They participate in UN peacekeeping missions to engage on humanitarian and international levels in the interest of the country;
- Air Force Day: It is observed annually on October 8th to honor the day of the organization’s founding in 1932.
- The IAF inventory:
- Itconsists of a number of aircraft, including the Ilyushin series, Boeing 707, SEPECAT Jaguar, Sukhoi Su-30, HAL Tejas, and MiG series;
- It also includes unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for surveillance and reconnaissance, missiles, and helicopters like the domestically built HAL Dhruv;
- India has inked a contract to purchase 36 Dassault Rafale aircraft, the newest model to join its fleet and the Indian Air Force operates 29 Rafale fighters as of December 2022.

- Training institutes for IAF: The Air Force Academy in Dindigul, the Pilot Training Establishment in Allahabad, the Institute of Aerospace Medicine in Bangalore, the Air Force Administrative College in Coimbatore, the Air Force Technical College in Bangalore, the Paratrooper’s Training School in Agra, and the Tactics and Air Combat and Defence Establishment in Gwalior are among the other training facilities for air force personnel in addition to the National Defence Academy.
