President Droupadi Murmu has given assent to the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026, granting Vande Mataram legal protection similar to Jana Gana Mana and criminalising intentional disruption or prevention of its singing.

Vande Mataram Gets Statutory Protection:

  • Presidential assent: President Droupadi Murmu approved the legislation on Tuesday, converting the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026 into law.
  • Parliamentary approval: The Lok Sabha passed the Bill on July 30, while the Rajya Sabha approved it on July 29.
  • Legal protection: The new law criminalises the intentional disruption or prevention of the singing of Vande Mataram.
  • Equal legal status: Vande Mataram now receives the same statutory protection under the amended law as the National Anthem, Jana Gana Mana.

About National Symbols of India:

●      Vande Mataram: Written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and originally composed in Sanskritised Bengali, it became an important symbol of the Indian freedom struggle.

●      National Song: Vande Mataram is officially recognised as India’s National Song, while Jana Gana Mana is the National Anthem.

●      Freedom movement: Vande Mataram became closely associated with the Swadeshi Movement and anti-colonial mobilisation.

●      Constitutional significance: The Constitution does not itself prescribe a detailed statutory code for every aspect of national-symbol observance; legal protection is provided through specific legislation and executive protocols.
