University Grant Commission warns students not to pursue an MPhil degree
News:
A notice from the University Grant Commission warns students not to pursue an MPhil degree since it is no longer recognized.
Universities have also been cautioned by the commission not to provide the curriculum, and applications for the 2023–2024 academic year are forbidden.
However, the MPhil degree awarded up until the new legislation’ notice date of 2022, however, will still be recognized.
About MPhil:
The full form of M Phil is Master of Philosophy. It is a postgraduate academic research programme that is of two years duration.
Candidates from any stream – Humanities, Commerce, Science, Law, Teaching etc. can pursue an MPhil course.
Even though the degree is officially categorised as a master’s, it resembles a doctorate. This is because an MPhil goes above and beyond the conventional taught Master’s degree by emphasising independent study and a more narrowly focused subject.
