Why in the news?
UN General Assembly adopts resolution calling for immediate and sustained humanitarian truce between Israeli forces and Hamas terrorists in Gaza.
The resolution introduced by Jordon garnered 120 votes in favor, with 14 against, and 45 abstentions.
- Israel announced the escalation of ground operations and increased airstrikes and readiness for an Israeli ground invasion.
- An Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman again told Gaza City residents to move south for their safety.
India’s Vote
India abstained from the voting.
Israel Hamas Conflict
- Hamas, an Islamist Palestinian militant group, operates from the Gaza Strip.
- On October 7, 2023, Hamas initiated a significant offensive from the Gaza Strip into Israel.
- In response, Israel conducted airstrikes in Gaza in retaliation to this sudden Hamas attack.
- The situation escalated, and Israel has declared a state of war against Hamas.
- Since then Israel is continuously striking Gaza.
United Nation General Assembly (UNGA)
- The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) is one of the six main organs of the United Nations, consisting of all 193 member states.
- UNGA was established in 1945 and has its headquarters in New York.
- It serves as a forum for member states to discuss and coordinate a wide range of international issues, including peace and security, development, human rights, and international law.
- Each member state has one vote in the UNGA, and decisions on most issues are made by a two-thirds majority.
- UNGA resolutions, while not legally binding, carry significant political weight and influence international policies and actions.
- The UNGA also elects the non-permanent members of the Security Council and approves the UN budget, among other important decisions for the UN.
