Tripartite peace accord

News

  • A tripartite agreement will be signed by the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA), the Indian government, and the Center.
  • Its goal is to establish enduring peace in the Northeast.
  • Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, will be present when the Memorandum of Settlement is signed.

The agreement would offer:

  • Provisions in the constitution for the protection of indigenous communities;
  • Financial packages for militant rehabilitation;
  • Examination of citizenship lists to identify undocumented immigrants;
  • More independence for Assam in matters of security, culture, and economy;
  • Analysis:
    • The agreement would be a significant step toward giving the Assamese people stability and putting an end to the ULFA insurgency.
    • But there are still some militants in the area, and achieving true peace will require consistent work from all parties.
    • The negotiations show that even in deeply entrenched conflicts, nonviolent negotiation can lead to progress despite years of bloodshed.
About North East Indian States

●   The region known as North-East India, or the “land of seven sisters,” is divided into two parts geographically and politically.

●   Blessed with a diverse range of physiographic and ecoclimatic conditions, the Northeastern Indian States serve as the geographic “gateway” for a large portion of India’s endemic flora and fauna.

●   In compliance with Article 244 of the Indian Constitution, the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution addresses the provisions for the governance of tribal areas in the states of Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram, which are located in the Northeast region of the country.

●   3.8% of the country’s population lives in the Northeast, which also makes up 8% of India’s total land area.

●   The Siliguri corridor, sometimes referred to as “chicken’s neck,” is a slender stretch of land in West Bengal that links this area to the rest of mainland India.
