TRANSITION TO NEW CRIMINAL LAWS IN INDIA
Why in the news?
- Ahead of the implementation starting July 1, significant modifications have been made to the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network Systems (CCTNS) to accommodate the new criminal laws.
- The shift from existing laws to the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Sakshya (BS), and Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) marks a comprehensive legal reform in India.
Legal Framework Changes
- BNSS replaces CrPC, with longer sentences for 33 offenses and community service for six crimes.
- Ongoing cases use old laws until resolved, maintaining dual CCTNS systems.
- Dummy FIRs educate police on new FIR format and laws.
