THREE LABOURERS DIE IN GUJARAT ILLEGAL COAL MINE
Why in the news?
Three labourers died from asphyxiation in an illegal coal mine in Gujarat, highlighting safety and regulatory concerns.
About Asphyxiation:
- Asphyxiation: insufficient oxygen supply due to abnormal breathing.
- Causes generalised hypoxia, primarily affecting tissues and organs.
- Can lead to severe consequences such as coma or death.

About Nitrogen Hypoxia Execution Method:
- Hypoxia: Insufficient oxygen in the body.
- Nitrogen hypoxia: Inhalation of pure/high-concentration nitrogen gas causing asphyxiation.
- New alternative to lethal injection/electrocution
- Execution method: Respirator mask with pure nitrogen.
- Results: Unconsciousness followed by death from lack of oxygen.
Difference Between Hypoxia and Anoxia
- Hypoxia: Oxygen levels drop below 2-3 mg/L of water.
- Anoxia: Oxygen levels are at zero.
- Impact:
- Hypoxia: Insufficient oxygen supply to tissues.
- Anoxia: Complete loss of oxygen supply to the body or brain.
