Why in the news?

  • The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) re-appointed PK Mishra as Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister and Ajit Doval as National Security Advisor (NSA) effective from June 10.

About PMO (Prime Minister’s Office):

  • Formed in 1947.
  • PMO is politically headed by the PM and administratively by the Principal Secretary.
  • Originally called the Prime Minister’s Secretariat; renamed PMO in 1977 during Morarji Desai’s ministry.
  • Location: Situated in the South Block (Secretariat Building), New Delhi.
  • Principal Secretary role created during Indira Gandhi’s tenure.
  • Supports the Prime Minister in various administrative and policy-making functions.
About National Security Advisor (NSA):

  • Role: Primary advisor to the Prime Minister of India on national security matters.

  • Formed in 1998.
