·    Historical context:

o    Practiced post-independence from 1952 to 1967, then discontinued.

About Delimitation

·    Delimitation defines boundaries of territorial constituencies to reflect population changes.

·    The Delimitation Commission operates independently of executive influence.

·    Constitutional status :

o    Article 82 mandates Parliament to enact a Delimitation Act after each Census.

o    Article 170 requires States to divide into territorial constituencies based on the Delimitation Act after each Census.

·         The first delimitation occurred in 1950-51, overseen by the President with Election Commission assistance.
