Tahawwur Rana, a key accused in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, has been extradited to India from the US. He allegedly helped David Headley scout targets and faces trial by the NIA for terrorism and criminal conspiracy charges.

Tahawwur Rana Extradited to India for 26/11 Role:

  • Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a key conspirator in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, was extradited from the US and arrived in Delhi on April 11, 2024.

  • Arrested in Chicago in 2009, Rana’s extradition follows a prolonged legal battle.
  • The National Investigation Agency (NIA) will prosecute him under various terrorism-related charges.
  • Other major accused like Hafiz Saeed, Sajid Mir, and Major Iqbal remain in Pakistan.

Legal Journey and Charges

  • In 2011, the NIA chargesheeted Rana and others under the UAPA and IPC, including charges of terrorism, waging war against India, and murder.
  • Although acquitted of charges linked to India by a US court, he was convicted on other terrorism counts.
  • He fought extradition citing “double jeopardy,” but US courts rejected his plea at all levels.
  • With the US Supreme Court denying his final appeal, the Biden administration approved his extradition to India.

Understanding Rana’s Role in the 26/11 Conspiracy:

●  Rana, a Pakistani-origin Canadian citizen, ran an immigration firm in Chicago.
●  He aided David Headley, his high school friend and LeT scout, in setting up a fake immigration office in Mumbai to serve as a cover for reconnaissance.
●  Headley testified that Rana was fully aware of the plan and provided logistical support including visa documents.
● Rana visited India with his wife before the attack and maintained constant contact with Headley during his visits.
● The NIA claims he was also involved in planning future attacks and met LeT operative Abdur Rehman in Dubai.
