  • President Droupadi Murmu will open the 37th Surajkund International Crafts Mela 2024 in Faridabad, Haryana, on February 2, 2024.

About the fair

  • The fair will highlight India’s cultural legacy and handicrafts and handlooms, showcasing their diversity and richness;
  • The Mela will feature participation from about 50 nations and these nations includes Zimbabwe, Mauritius, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Namibia, Nigeria, Uganda, Nepal, Russia, and Sri Lanka among others;
  • Tanzania will take part in the craft mela as the Partner Nation;
  • The theme state is Gujarat, which uses a variety of artistic mediums and regional handicrafts to highlight its distinct culture and rich history;
  • In an effort to promote corporate social responsibility, the Surajkund Mela Authority is offering senior citizens, serving military personnel, and disabled individuals a 50% discount on admission tickets.

The state of India’s handicraft industry

  • Handicrafts:
    • The term “handicraft” essentially describes the manual or tool-assisted preparation of raw materials to make decorative or functional objects out of clay, stone, rock, paper, etc.;
    • They are items made by hand with simple tools, rather than mass production methods and equipment and they are quite similar to simple arts and crafts;;
  • Products made in Handicraft industry: The products created as a result of the efforts are ornamental in nature in addition to being intended for a particular purpose or use;
  • India’s rural economy and Handicraft Industry: Rural economy has relied heavily on the handloom and handicraft sectors for many years and India has been a producer of sculptures, ceramics, glassware, attars, agarbattis, handprinted textiles, embroidered goods, zari goods, woodware, and imitation jewelry;
  • Trade of handicrafts in India:
    • India is among the top exporters of handicrafts;
    • With the exception of handmade carpets, India’s total handicraft export in March 2022 was USD 174.26 million, an increase of 8% over February 2022;
    • Indian handicraft exports reached a total value of USD 4.35 billion in 2021–2022, up 25.7% from the year before.

  • Handicraft related Government Initiatives:
    • Ambedkar Hastshilp Vikas Yojana: To assist craftsmen with their requirements for technology, infrastructure, and human resource development. The goal of organizing craftspeople into societies and self-help organizations in order to promote mass production and cost savings in the acquisition of raw materials.
  • Mega Cluster Scheme: The creation of jobs and raising the living standards of artisans are two of the program’s goals. In order to scale infrastructure and production chains at handicraft centers, particularly in remote areas, this program uses a cluster-based methodology.

  • NOTE: Eastern African Rift: It is a geographical feature in East Africa that stretches from Mozambique in the south to the northeastern Afar Triangle. The African Plate is breaking apart into two smaller plates along the tectonic plate boundary known as the East African Rift. This region is characterized by striking geological features such as deep valleys, steep cliffs, and active volcanic activity;

India-Tanzania Relation

  • Tanzania is viewed by India as an important partner in the Indo-Pacific area, which is consistent with the larger geopolitical backdrop and Tanzania is significantly important in the India-Africa relation in general.
  • Economic Partnership:
    • Tanzania exports the most to India, where two-way trade reached USD 6.4 billion in 2022–2023 (including USD 3.9 billion in exports from India);
    • Tanzania’s fifth-largest investor is India;
    • Tanzania receives the following major exports from India: petroleum products, pharmaceuticals, machinery, boilers, nuclear reactors, electrical and electronic equipment, sugars, and sugar confectionery;
    • Tanzania’s principal exports to India include gemstones, cashew nuts, cloves, ores, and scrap metal, as well as gold ore.
