STUDY REVEALS NEARLY 6 MILLION TREES VANISHED FROM INDIAN FARMLANDS

Why in the news?

  • A study by the University of Copenhagen using satellite imagery found that India lost nearly 5.8 million mature trees on farmlands from 2019 to 2022.
  • Analysis showed 11% of trees detected in 2010-2011 were gone by 2018-2022.
  • Focus was on large trees, indicating localised losses rather than overall tree cover decline.Significant tree loss observed in central India, especially Telangana and Maharashtra, with up to 50% loss in certain areas.

What is Agroforestry?

  • Agroforestry integrates woody plants with crops or animals on the same land.
  • It balances ecological and economic benefits.
  • Key attributes: productivity, sustainability, and adaptability.
  • Aims: to enhance land productivity while conserving resources.
  • Practices should align with regional customs for widespread acceptance.

Types Of Agroforestry:

  • Agrisilvicultural systems: Combining crops and trees, like alley cropping or home gardens.
  • Silvopastoral systems: Integrating forestry with animal grazing on pastures or rangelands.
  • Agrosilvopastoral systems: Incorporating trees, animals, and crops, exemplified by home gardens with grazing animals and scattered trees on croplands.
