STATE SEEKS CENTRAL APPROVAL TO LINK E-CHALLANS WITH BANK ACCOUNTS

Why in the news?

  • The state government has requested the central government to link e-challans with motorists’ bank accounts to recover ₹2,429 crore from 42.89 million traffic violators.
  • Despite various drives, only 35% of the penalties levied through e-challans have been recovered in the last five years.

About the Proposal :

  • The proposal includes linking e-challans to the Fastag and motor insurance payment accounts to facilitate recovery.

Account Deduction:

  • Toll fare is deducted directly from the linked account.

Vehicle-Specific:

  • Non-transferable between vehicles once affixed.

Purchase and Recharge:

  • Available from National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) Member Banks.
  • Prepaid accounts need to be recharged based on usage.
