Six Thrilling Categories:
- Over 180 pairs of buffaloes participated in six categories: negilu hiriya, negilu kiriya, hagga hiriya, hagga kiriya, adda halage, and kane halage.
- Speed contests determined winners in the first five categories, while the kane halage category showcased strength and strategy.
Innovations and Longest Track:
- The kane halage category introduced a unique element where buffaloes splashed water on banners at different points.
- This competitive Kambala featured a longer track of 155 meters, exceeding the usual length of 145-147 meters.
Agrarian Roots and Traditional Significance:
- Kambala, deeply rooted in coastal Karnataka’s agrarian practices, originated from the term “gampa kala,” signifying wet mud or slush.
- The sport traditionally aligns with the post-monsoon period between November and March, marking the conclusion of the tilling season.
