Sikh Gurdwaras Act, 1925 : Amendment
News: The Sikh Gurdwaras Act, 1925 has been revised by the Punjab Assembly to make Gurbani (holy songs) broadcast from Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) available to all media channels without charge.
With this action, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) party-affiliated television channel PTC’s purported monopoly will be broken.
The opposition party has questioned the ability of the Punjab Assembly to change the Gurdwaras Act without the approval of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), which has caused controversy over the move.
The management of Gurdwaras, Sikh places of worship, in the Indian states of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh as well as the union territory of Chandigarh is the responsibility of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, which was founded in 1920 and has its headquarters in Amritsar.
Additionally, Darbar Sahib in Amritsar is managed by SGPC.
