Shingles Awareness Crucial for Adults Over 50 in India
Why in the News?
A global survey reveals that 56.6% of Indian adults over 50 lack awareness about shingles (herpes zoster), despite 90% carrying the virus. Experts emphasize vaccination and early treatment to prevent severe complications, especially for older adults with weakened immunity.
Lack of Awareness about Shingles:
- A global survey found that 6% of Indian adults over 50 have limited or no knowledge about shingles.
- This is concerning as over 90% of adults carry the varicella-zoster virus, which can reactivate as shingles later in life.
What is Shingles?
- Shingles (Herpes Zoster) is a viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox.
- After chickenpox recovery, the virus remains dormant in the body and can reactivate years later.
- It leads to a painful rash with blisters, typically appearing on one side of the body.
- Age and weakened immunity significantly increase the risk of developing shingles.
Symptoms and Complications
- Initial symptoms include pain, itching, or tingling, followed by a band-like rash.
- Other symptoms: fever, headache, fatigue, and sensitivity to touch.
- The most common complication is postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), which causes long-lasting nerve pain after the rash heals.
Prevention and Treatment
- The Shingrix vaccine is highly effective in reducing the risk of shingles and complications.
- Early antiviral medications help lessen symptoms and speed up recovery.
- Raising awareness and promoting vaccination are crucial for preventing shingles, especially among older adults.
