  • Coined by English naturalist Charles Darwin in“The Origin of Species,” the concept highlights organisms that have retained ancestral traits through evolutionary time.
  • Examples include the horseshoe crab, a marine chelicerate arthropod, which has maintained its basic body plan for millions of years.
