SC ALLOWS NHAI PROJECTS TO PROCEED DESPITE ENVIRONMENTAL CLEARANCE ORDER

Why in the news?

  • The Supreme Court permitted ongoing National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) projects to proceed despite earlier quashing of environmental clearance exemptions for linear projects.
  • NHAI cited potential delays and financial losses for 485 national highway projects worth Rs 6.19 lakh crore without this permission.

About National Highways Authority of India (NHAI):

  • India’s premier highway infrastructure creator.
  • Statutory body under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
  • Constituted under the National Highways Authority of India Act, 1998.
  • Made operational in February 1995.
  • Structure includes technical, finance, administrative, and vigilance wings.
The Environment (Protection) Act (EPA):
