SC ALLOWS NHAI PROJECTS TO PROCEED DESPITE ENVIRONMENTAL CLEARANCE ORDER
Why in the news?
- The Supreme Court permitted ongoing National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) projects to proceed despite earlier quashing of environmental clearance exemptions for linear projects.
- NHAI cited potential delays and financial losses for 485 national highway projects worth Rs 6.19 lakh crore without this permission.

- India’s premier highway infrastructure creator.
- Statutory body under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
- Constituted under the National Highways Authority of India Act, 1998.
- Made operational in February 1995.
- Structure includes technical, finance, administrative, and vigilance wings.
