RISING WOMEN PARTICIPATION IN MGNREGS

Why in the News?

  • In FY 2023-24, women’s participation in MGNREGS reached a decade-high.
  • Women person-days constituted 59.25% of total participation till December 24.

About Overall Impact:

  • Out of 238.62 crore person-days in 2023-24, women contributed 141.37 crore.
  • Upward trajectory in women’s participation, despite potential year-end changes.
  • Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) affirms a significant rise in female Labour Force Participation Rate in rural areas.
  • Female unemployment rate decreased from 3.8% in 2017-18 to 1.8% in 2022-23, reflecting positive employment trends.

State-wise Disparities:

  • Southern states (Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Goa) recorded over 70% women participation.
  • Northern states (Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh) had rates around 40% or lower.
  • Improvements observed in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Lakshadweep.
