The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a ‘red’ alert for Delhi on 19 May due to ongoing heatwave conditions. This alert indicates a very high likelihood of heat-related illnesses and serious health concerns for vulnerable populations, including the elderly, infants, and those with chronic diseases.

  • Temperature Records: On 18 May , parts of Delhi experienced extreme heat, with the highest temperature recorded at 46.8°C in Mungeshpur, followed by 46.7°C in Najafgarh.
  • Ongoing Heatwave: Heatwave conditions are expected to persist in Delhi through 19,20 and 21 May. The IMD has issued an ‘orange’ alert for these three days, advising people to be prepared for potential heat-related illnesses due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures.
  • Forecasted Temperatures: The maximum temperatures at Safdarjung are anticipated to remain around 44-45°C from 20 May to 23 May. The heatwave conditions are predicted to continue in many parts of the city during this period.

Public Health Advisory: Residents are advised to take precautions against the extreme heat, such as staying hydrated, avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours, and being aware of the symptoms of heat-related illnesses.
