Recently ex-IAS officers have written a letter to the PM citing the “new Lakshadweep draft laws are against the region”. Brief about the related issue and provide suitable comments.
Introduction:
Lakshadweep are a group of islands situated off the Kerala coast. There are 39 islands in this group. The total area is about 32 sq km. It is a union territory of India and is headed by Lt. Governor.
Body:
Recently there are certain laws being implemented in the islands. These laws will be directly implemented by the Ministry of Home affairs upon the recommendation of Lt. Governor. Recent policies have created a backlash.
The policies that have been recommended and the cause of concern are as follows:
According to some internal sources, PASA allows thorough inspection of the fishing boats. There are rumors that these boats contain smuggled goods and also are home to illegal activities.
Conclusion:
The idea behind these policies is to ensure development of the islands. Also a lot of emphasis has been given to tourism. The intrigues details are yet to be drafted and as usual there are a lot of criticism against the ways in which they are being implemented. We can conclude that local people need to be taken into consideration since the population is very low.
