Why in the news?
Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, located in Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei, is renowned as one of the most beautiful mosques in the Asia Pacific. Completed in 1958, this stunning example of modern Islamic architecture was commissioned by Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III, after whom it is named. The mosque’s design uniquely blends Mughal and Malay architectural styles, with contributions from architect Rudolfo Nolli and the firm Booty and Edwards Chartered Architects.

Key Points:
The mosque is situated on an artificial lagoon along the Brunei River, adjacent to Kampong Ayer, a “village in the water.” Notable features include its towering marble minarets, gold-covered domes, and lush gardens. A bridge connects the mosque to Kampong Ayer, while another leads to a replica of a 16th-century royal barge, used for Quran reading competitions.
The main dome, covered in pure gold, is a striking feature, and the mosque’s 52-meter height offers panoramic views of the city from its minaret. Inside, the mosque is reserved for prayer, featuring Italian marble, Shanghai granite, English crystal chandeliers, and Saudi carpets. Despite its grandeur attracting many tourists, the mosque remains a vital place of worship, symbolizing Brunei’s deep Islamic faith.
