Why in the News?
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs directs all States and Union Territories to display the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban (PMAY-U) logo including beneficiary details on each house constructed under the scheme.
About Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U):
- PMAY is a Government initiative falling under the mission “Housing for All by 2022,” aimed at urban housing.
- It’s implemented by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).
- PMAY makes home loans affordable for the urban poor by providing interest rate subsidies during repayment through EMI.
- Beneficiaries: Targets urban housing shortage for Economically Weaker Section (EWS), Low-Income Group (LIG), and Middle-Income Groups (MIG I & II), including slum dwellers.
- Funding Structure: Implemented as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) except for Credit Linked Subsidy(CLSS), which operates as a Central Sector Scheme.
- Geotagging: Requires geotagging of houses under the scheme to the Bhuvan HFA application, a web-based platform developed by ISRO.
- Women Empowerment: ownership in the name of a female member or joint names.

Four Verticals of PMAY-U:
In Situ Slum Redevelopment (ISSR) | Implements redevelopment
with private sector involvement to provide houses for eligible slum dwellers. |
Credit Linked Subsidy (CLSS) | Offers interest subsidies for
EWS, LIG, MIG (I & II) beneficiaries based on loan amounts. |
Affordable Housing Through Partnership (AHP) | Supports affordable housing
projects eligible for central assistance with a minimum percentage allocated for EWS category. |
Beneficiary-led Individual House Construction (BLC): | Provides central assistance
for EWS families for individual house construction or enhancement. |

- Global Housing Technology Challenge:Aims to identify and mainstream innovative, eco-friendly construction technologies globally.
- CLSS Awas Portal (CLAP):A common platform integrating stakeholders for real-time processing and tracking of subsidy status.
