Why in the News?

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs directs all States and Union Territories to display the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban (PMAY-U) logo including beneficiary details on each house constructed under the scheme.

About Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U): 

  • PMAY is a Government initiative falling under the mission “Housing for All by 2022,” aimed at urban housing.
  • It’s implemented by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).
  • PMAY makes home loans affordable for the urban poor by providing interest rate subsidies during repayment through EMI.
  • Beneficiaries: Targets urban housing shortage for Economically Weaker Section (EWS), Low-Income Group (LIG), and Middle-Income Groups (MIG I & II), including slum dwellers.
  • Funding Structure: Implemented as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) except for Credit Linked Subsidy(CLSS), which operates as a Central Sector Scheme.
  • Geotagging: Requires geotagging of houses under the scheme to the Bhuvan HFA application, a web-based platform developed by ISRO.
  • Women Empowerment: ownership in the name of a female member or joint names.
