Previous Announcements at CoP-26

  • At CoP-26 in 2021, PM Modi announced five targets known as Panchamrit in India’s climate action plan.
  • Targets include achieving
    • net-zero status by 2070,
    • 500 GW of energy from non-fossil sources by 2030,
    • cutting carbon emissions by one billion tonnes,
    • reducing carbon intensity by 45%, and
    • meeting half of energy requirements from renewables by 2030.

Global Stocktake and CoP-28 Focus

  • CoP-28 will conclude the Global Stocktake, evaluating countries’ actions towards the 2015 Paris Agreement targets.
  • The Paris Agreement aims to limit the global temperature increase to below 2 degrees Celsius and ideally below 1.5 degrees Celsius by the century’s end.

India’s Climate Priorities

  • India, focusing on climate change during its G20 Presidency, committed to tripling installed renewable energy capacity by 2030.
  • The upcoming CoP-28 is seen as an opportunity to advance these successes.

PM Modi will engage in bilateral meetings with other participating world leaders during his visit to Dubai, enhancing global collaboration on climate action.
