PM Modi Inaugurates Mizoram’s First Railway Link

Why in the News ?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Bairabi-Sairang New Railway Line in Mizoram, establishing the state’s first-ever railway connection. Alongside, several development projects worth over ₹9,000 crore were launched, aimed at boosting infrastructure, connectivity, energy, sports, and education in the region.

Key Infrastructure Projects Launched:

  • Bairabi-Sairang Railway Line: Built at a cost of over ₹8,000 crore, the railway line traverses a hilly terrain with 45 tunnels, 55 major bridges, and 88 minor bridges.
  • New Train Services:
    Rajdhani Express connects Aizawl directly to Delhi.
    • Sairang-Guwahati Express enhances connectivity between Mizoram and Assam.
    • Sairang-Kolkata Express links Mizoram to Kolkata.
  • Road Infrastructure:
    Foundation laid for Aizawl Bypass Road (45 km) worth ₹500 crore to decongest Aizawl city and improve access to Lunglei, Siaha, and Lengpui Airport.
    • Roads like Thenzawl-Sialsuk and Khankawn-Rongura were also initiated.
  • Chhimtuipui River Bridge: Foundation stone laid for a bridge that will cut travel time by 2 hours and boost cross-border trade under the Kaladan Multimodal Transit framework.
  • Energy Sector:
    LPG Bottling Plant (30,000 metric tons/year) at Mualkhang, Aizawl, for energy self-sufficiency in the region.

Social Sector and Strategic Impact:

  • Educational Initiatives:
    Inauguration of a Residential School at Kawrthah and an Eklavya Model Residential School at Tlangnuam under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram scheme.
  • Sports Development:
    Foundation stone for the Khelo India Multipurpose Indoor Hall was laid to strengthen sports infrastructure and promote talent.
  • Strategic Importance:
    The projects improve last-mile connectivity, strengthen North-East infrastructure, and support regional integration and development.
    • Aligns with PM Modi’s vision of a Viksit Bharat and Improved North East Integration.
