PM Modi inaugurates Atal Setu 

Why in the News?

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 22-km Atal Setu, the longest sea bridge in India, during the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link ceremony.
  • Project’s Prolonged Journey:
    • Initially conceptualized in the 1960s, the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link project faced delays and underwent multiple revisions.
    • The first tender was floated in 2006, but the project experienced setbacks, including business disputes, until work finally began in 2018.
  • Deputy CM Fadnavis: Emphasized the economic benefits for Navi Mumbai and Raigad district, anticipating positive impacts for the next 25 years.

Key Details of Atal Setu:

  • The six-lane bridge connects Sewri in Mumbai to Chirle in Raigad district.
  • The bridge, spanning 21.8 km, is also the nation’s longest maritime bridge.
    • In total 16.5 km over the sea and approximately 5.5 km on land.
  • Enhances connectivity from Mumbai to Navi Mumbai, Pune, Goa, and South India.
    • Benefits extend to shorter routes from Mumbai International Airport and Navi Mumbai International Airport.
    • The bridge enhances connectivity between Mumbai Port and Jawaharlal Nehru Port, facilitating smoother maritime transportation.
  • Open to the public from Saturday morning i.e. 13th January 2024.
  • PM traveled the entire length of the bridge from Mumbai to Raigad for the inaugural function, underlining the significance of the project for the region’s development.
  • Gratitude to Japan and Tribute to Shinzo Abe:
    • Expressed gratitude to the government of Japan for their contribution to the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link project.
    • Eighty percent of the project’s total cost is funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), with the remaining twenty percent being split between the federal and state governments.

Additional Infrastructure Initiatives:

Prime Minister inaugurated various key infrastructure projects, including the

  • Orange Gate to Marine Drive tunnel,
  • Digha Goan suburban station on the Trans-harbour line,
  • Uran Kharkopar new suburban line,
  • Sixth line between Khar Road and Goregaon,
  • Navi Mumbai Metro One, and
  • Surya regional drinking water project.
