Highlights of the Inauguration:
- The PM inaugurated Kolkata Metro’s Esplanade-Howrah Maidan section, including India’s first underwater transportation tunnel.
- PM engages with students during symbolic Metro ride, showcasing engineering prowess.
- Additionally, the 5.4 km Kavi Subhash-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay section of New Garia-Airport line was inaugurated.
- Aims to integrate southeastern Kolkata into the Metro network, easing congestion and improving connectivity.
About India’s First Water Metro :
● Part of Kolkata Metro’s East-West Corridor. ● Passes beneath Hooghly River in the city’s northeast. ● Tunnel located 13 metres below riverbed, 33 metres below ground. ● Total length: 520 metres. ● Forms segment of 4.8 km underground section from Howrah Maidan to Esplanade. ● Howrah station is the deepest in India. ● Expected to traverse river stretch in 45 seconds. ● Emergency exits provided for seismic events. |
