Periyar Tiger Reserve : Bird Survey

News: The Periyar Tiger Reserve is home to 231 species of birds, 11 of which were not counted in earlier surveys, according to a four-day bird census undertaken by the forest department.

 

  • The Periyar Tiger Reserve is situated in Kerala’s Western Ghats.
  • In 1978, it was designated as a tiger reserve.
  • The River Periyar, whose source is located deep within the reserve, gave it its name.
  • The reserve is drained by the Pamba and Periyar rivers.
  • Several tribal communities, like the Mannan and Pali communities, call it home.
  • There are more than 171 species of grasses among the tropical evergreen, semi-evergreen, and moist deciduous flora.
  • More than 171 different species of grass can be found.
  • Teak, mangoes, rosewood, jamun, jacarandas, terminalias, tamarind, royal ponciana, bamboos, etc. are among the significant plant species.
  • Elephants, wild pigs, sambar, gaurs, mouse deer, barking deer, Indian wild dog, and tigers are among the fauna.
  • The uncommon lion-tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, Gee’s golden langur, Common langur, and Bonnet macaque are among the four main primates found at Periyar.
  • Moreover, it is thought to be the home of the elusive Nilgiri Tahr.
