About Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose
- On January 23, 1897, in Cuttack, Orissa Division, Bengal Province, Subhas Chandra Bose was born into Janakinath and Prabhavati Dutt Boses (parents).
- He had passed the Indian Civil Services (ICS) exam in 1919, but later on, Bose resigned.
- The teachings of Vivekananda had a profound effect on him, and he regarded him as his spiritual teacher and Chittaranjan Das as his political mentor.
- Bose association with Congress:
- He opposed the Motilal Nehru Report, which advocated for India to have dominion status, and he stood for unqualified swaraj (independence).
- He took part in the Salt Satyagraha of 1930 and was strongly against the Gandhi-Irwin Pact signing in 1931 and the suspension of the Civil Disobedience Movement.
- Along with Jawaharlal Nehru and M.N. Roy, he was closely linked to left-wing politics in the Congress during the 1930s.
- In 1938, Bose emerged victorious in the Congress presidential election held in Haripura. He defeated Pattabhi Sitarammayya, Gandhi’s nominee for president, in the 1939 presidential election held in Tripuri but Bose left Congress and resigned due to ideological differences with Gandhi, and in his place, Rajendra Prasad was appointed in Tripuri.He founded the “Forward Bloc,” a new political party with the goal of consolidating the political left and a sizable support base in his native Bengal.
- Bose and the Indian National Army:
- After traveling from Germany to Japanese-controlled Singapore in July 1943, he made the infamous slogan “Delhi Chalo” and declared the establishment of the Indian National Army and the Azad Hind Government on October 21, 1943.
- Originally composed of Indian prisoners of war taken prisoner by Japan during the Malayan (modern-day Malaysia) campaign and in Singapore, the INA was established under the leadership of Mohan Singh and Japanese Major Iwaichi Fujiwara.
- Both Indian civilians in South-East Asia and Indian prisoners of war from Singapore were included in the INA and it gained around fifty thousand strength.
- Netaji Death:
- Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s death is still shrouded in mystery and controversy and it is told that he was tragically killed in a plane crash (allegedly traveling to Tokyo from Manchuria) in Taihoku (now Taipei), Taiwan, on August 18, 1945, during the final days of World War II;
- Many theories and conjectures have been made about the circumstances of his death; some claim the crash was staged, while others suggest he survived and lived in secret;
- Netaji’s legacy as a valiant freedom fighter and his unwavering pursuit of India’s independence continue to inspire generations of Indians, and his contributions remain an essential part of India’s history, despite the mystery surrounding him.
- Analysis of Netaji: He was one of the key players in the Indian Independence Movement (INM) and in addition to being a capable leader, he was crucial to the independence movement as he played a proactive and combative part in the INM. Not only was his leadership style appealing, but it also inspired many others to join the fight for Indian independence. Even though the Congress wanted complete freedom for India through a Dominion status, he argued for complete freedom for India as soon as possible. Subhash Chandra Bose was the driving force behind the creation of the Indian National Army (INA) and the Azad Hind forces, which represent a significant turning point in the history of the country’s freedom struggle.
