About the Citizenship Issues:

  • Despite the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, Pakistani Hindus arriving in India after December 31, 2014, face hurdles in obtaining citizenship.
  • Citizenship applications under the Citizenship Act, 1955, have been pending for years, leaving many without legal status or access to benefits.
  • Pakistani Hindu families in Barmer lack basic amenities like proper roads, sewerage lines, and clean drinking water.
  • Many struggle to make ends meet through menial jobs and face social stigma, hindering their integration and access to education and healthcare.
About The Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA):

  • The Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) amends the Citizenship Act, 1955, allowing for citizenship provisions to be extended to certain undocumented migrants.
  • It excludes Muslims and includes Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.
  • Passed by Parliament on December 11, 2019, it received presidential assent the following day, becoming law.
  • CAA allows for citizenship to be granted to undocumented migrants who arrived before December 31, 2014, due to religious persecution.
  • On March 11, 2024, the Centre notified the relevant rules, enabling the implementation of CAA, aiming to fast-track citizenship for eligible non-Muslim migrants.
