Operation Indravati

  • India has initiated Operation Indravati aimed at relocating its citizens from Haiti to the Dominican Republic;
  • External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar announced in a social media update that 12 Indians were successfully evacuatednand he also expressed gratitude to the Government of the Dominican Republic for their assistance.

About:  

  • Location:
    • Haiti is located on the western portion of the island of Hispaniola, sharing the landmass with the Dominican Republic and situated between Cuba and Puerto Rico;
    • Its northern coastline is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, while the western and southern shores are bounded by the Caribbean Sea.
  • Capital: it’s capital is ‘Port-au-Prince.’
  • Unstable Polity: Despite ongoing efforts to recover from the devastating earthquake of 2010, Haiti continues to contend with the challenge of armed groups asserting control over significant territories within the country.

History of Haiti:

  • The majority of its inhabitants are descendants of African slaves;
  • Achieving independence from France in 1804, Haiti became the second nation in the Americas, following the United States, to liberate itself from colonial dominance;
  • It stands as the world’s premier Black-led republic, having endured approximately two centuries under Spanish colonial governance and over a century under French rule.

India-Haiti Relations:

●   Diplomatic Relation: India and Haiti established diplomatic relations in September 1996 and, Haiti appointed an Honorary Consul in New Delhi in October 2014.

●   Multilateral Collaboration: Haiti has consistently backed Indian candidatures in various international organizations, including the International Court of Justice (ICJ), UNESCO, International Maritime Organization, and World Customs Organization (WCO).

●   Trade and Economic Exchange:

○   Major exports from India to Haiti include pharmaceutical goods, textiles, rubber products, cosmetics, and plastic and linoleum products;

○   India has granted duty-free access to Haitian products as a special gesture toward the Least Developed Country status.

●  Indian Community in Haiti: The Indian community in Haiti is relatively small, comprising mostly Indian passport holders and among them, professionals such as doctors, engineers, technicians, and private business owners are prominent.
