Nutrient Based Subsidy Scheme

News: To address the issue of unbalanced nutrient use, the Commission on Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) has advised the Centre to include urea in the nutrient-based subsidy (NBS) scheme.

The Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilisers’ Department of Fertilisers is implementing a Nutrient Based Subsidy Scheme in 2010.

Each grade of subsidised phosphoric and potassium (P&K) fertilisers receives a specific amount of subsidy based on its nutrient content each year.

An inter-ministerial committee determines the subsidy under this programme for phosphate (P) and potassic (K) fertilisers by taking into account benchmark international prices for both finished fertilisers and raw materials.

The subsidy is offered to registered P&K fertiliser importers and manufacturers who sell these fertilisers to farmers at discounted prices.

It aids farmers in ensuring that vital nutrients are available at discounted rates.

It justifies the P&K fertiliser subsidy, ensuring effective and efficient use of public funds.
