NIA CHARGES SIX FOR ASSAM ARMY CAMP TERROR ATTACK
Why in the news?
- The National Investigation Agency (NIA) filed a chargesheet against Paresh Baruah, the fugitive chief of ULFA(I), and five others.
- The charges relate to a “terror attack” on an Army camp in eastern Assam in November 2023.
About the United Liberation Front of Assam(ULFA):
- ULFA: Militant outfit in Assam, aims for socialist independent state.
- Founded in 1979 by Paresh Baruah.
- Established ties with NSCN in 1983, Kachin Independence Army in 1987.
- Indian Army operations started in 1990, ongoing.
- Government banned ULFA in 1990 under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
- Suffered a setback in 2003 with Bhutan’s Operation All Clear flushing them out.
