About Concerns Raised by GANHRI Sub-Committee:

  • GANHRI Sub-Committee expressed concerns in March 2023 regarding NHRC’s independence from government interference.
  • Involvement of police officers in human rights investigations was criticised as a conflict of interest.
  • Lack of representation from India’s largest minority religions and gender imbalance were highlighted as areas of deficiency.

  • GANHRI: Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions, recognized UN partner.
  • Established: In 1993 as Coordinating Committee of National Institutions(ICC), became GANHRI in 2016.
  • Membership: Comprises 120 national human rights institutions, including India.
  • Secretariat: Located in Geneva, Switzerland.
