  • To raise public awareness of voting issues and motivate people to take part in the electoral process, today i.e. 25th January, 2024 marks the 14th annual National Voters’ Day.
  • Every year on January 25, people celebrate the Day, which commemorates the Election Commission of India’s founding day.
  • President Droupadi Murmu will present the 2023 Best Electoral Practices Awards during the function in New Delhi.
  • About the awards:
    • Officers at the State and District levels will receive awards for their exceptional work in managing elections in 2023 in a variety of areas, including IT initiatives, voter outreach and awareness, election management, security, and the electoral roll;
    • Important stakeholders like government agencies and media outlets will also receive awards for their invaluable work raising voter awareness;
    • Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar will present President Murmu with the first copy of the ECI Publication – ECI initiatives for General Elections 2024 on this special occasion;
    • The heads of the election management organizations in the Maldives, the Philippines, Russia, Sri Lanka, and Uzbekistan will also be present at the event.

Why Voting is Necessary?

  • By exercising his or her right to vote through the universal adult franchise process, a citizen can participate in the political process of their nation and exercise a powerful tool i.e. voting;
  • Even though our democracy has advanced, not every citizen in the nation understands how important it is to have the ability to vote to usher in democracy;
  • Voting rates have not been encouraging in some regions due to hesitation or inhibition as well as other unusual reasons, which has an impact on the larger process of establishing a participatory democracy.

About National Voters Day

  • Encouraging, facilitating, and optimizing enrolment, particularly for first-time voters is the celebration’s primary goal.
  • Since 2011, the nation has observed this day annually to commemorate the founding of the Election Commission of India on January 25, 1950.
  • It emphasizes the right to vote as a fundamental right and not only encourages young people to engage in the political process.
  • Since our choice of leader will determine the course of the nation, National Voters Day is an important component of Indi;
  • National Voters Day 2024:
    • A brief voter education film called “My Vote My Duty,” which was made by ECI in collaboration with well-known director Shri Raj Kumar Hirani, will also be shown and it features several celebrities expressing sentiments that highlight the importance of one vote and the democratic spirit;
    • The Election Commission of India will commemorate 75 years of serving the country on January 25, 2024 and a commemorative postage stamp with the theme “Inclusive Elections” will be released to mark this historic occasion and in anticipation of the 2024 Parliamentary Elections;
    • The occasion will also see the launch of a cutting-edge multi-media campaign for voter education and awareness in advance of the upcoming 2024 parliamentary elections.

About Election Commission of India (ECI)

  • In India, the Election Commission of India (ECI) is an independent constitutional body tasked with running the Union and State electoral systems and it was founded on January 25, 1950;
  • The organization conducts elections for the nation’s president and vice president, as well as for the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, State Legislative Assemblies, and other offices;
  • The Commission’s organizational structure:
    • The Election Commissioner Amendment Act of 1989 allowed the commission to expand from having just one election commissioner to a multi-member body;
    • Two Election Commissioners (ECs) and a Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) currently make up the commission;
    • The commission’s secretariat is situated in New Delhi.
