Why in the news?

The 37th edition of the National Games will begin in Goa from October 26 to November 9th ,2023. It’s the first time Goa is hosting national games.

  • The National Games are India’s homespun Olympic-style multi-sport event where athletes from the various states and Union Territories compete.
  • National Games trace their roots back to the early 1920s when the Indian Olympic Association initiated the concept to promote sports at the national level.
  • The first National Games took place in 1924, in Lahore( Undivided India) marking the beginning of a grand sporting tradition.
  • In 1985 the first National Games on the lines of the Olympics were held in New Delhi.
  • Athletes in The National Games 2023 will compete in 43 sports increasing from 36 last year.
  • The National Games 2023 will witness various games making debut for first time including:
    • Mallakhamb
    • Roll Ball
    • Golf
    • Kalliyarapattu
    • Beach Football
    • Sepaktakraw,
    • Sqay martial arts, including others.
  • Last edition of the National Games was hosted by Gujarat , where the Services Sports Control Board emerged as champions .
  • To celebrate tradition, the sports of lagori and gatka have been included as demonstration sports, adding a unique and cultural dimension to the event.
