What are Mumps?

  • Cause: Mumps is caused by the mumps virus, a type of paramyxovirus.
  • Symptoms: Initial symptoms include headache, fever, and fatigue, followed by swelling of salivary glands, leading to puffy cheeks and a tender jaw.
  • Transmission: Spread through direct contact or airborne droplets from infected individuals’ respiratory tract.
  • Affected Population: Common in unvaccinated children aged 2-12, but vaccinated adolescents and adults can still contract it due to waning immunity.
  • Incubation Period: Averages 16-18 days, with a range of 12-25 days.
  • Symptoms: Range from mild to severe, including swollen salivary or parotid glands, difficulty chewing, testicular pain, fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, and loss of appetite.
  • Treatment: No specific treatment, but symptoms can be managed with medications
