Bapu (Father of Nation)

The most outstanding leader of the Indian independence movement was Mahatma Gandhi. His life served as his lesson, and he continues to inspire people all over the world. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, also known as Mahatma Gandhi, was born in Porbandar, Gujarat, on October 2, 1869. In 1891, he graduated from England with a law degree. He lived in South Africa from 1893 to 1914 before going into Indian politics in 1915. During his struggle in South Africa, he evolved his nonviolent political philosophy of Satyagraha to give the mass movement a new direction. Gandhi ji started mass movements, a new phase in the Indian national movement, which is considered a very powerful tool used for India’s independence and it also gave Gandhi ji prominence in the Indian independence movement.

In January 1915, Gandhi ji made his way back to India. His work was well known in South Africa, not only by the well-educated but also by the general populace. On the advice of Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Gandhiji traveled throughout British India for a year, getting to know the country and its people. He made his first significant public appearance at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) inauguration in February 1916. After revealing that Indian nationalism was an elite phenomenon in his speech in Banaras, Gandhiji expressed his desire to make Indian nationalism more accurately reflect the interests of the Indian people as a whole.

He always clung to non-violence and simple living in his principles, practices, and beliefs throughout his life. The country respectfully refers to him as Bapu, the father of the nation, and he influenced many great leaders. He advocated for the rights of untouchables, referring to them as “children of God” or Harijan. Gandhi ji is said to have been given the title of Mahatma by Rabindranath Tagore. He was referred to as the Father of the Nation for the first time by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. The world over, millions of people were inspired by the philosophy of Gandhi and numerous eminent global figures, such as Nelson Mandela, adopted the teachings and lifestyle of Mahatma Gandhi. His influence on the world stage is therefore still very great.

Mahatma Gandhi passed away on January 30, 1948 and Nathuram Godse shot Gandhiji three times at close range in the chest while he was traveling to the Birla House in New Delhi to speak at a prayer meeting which resulted into the instant death of Gandhiji.
