Why in the News?

Our honorable President will visit the Mahamaya Temple in Ratanpur, Chattisgarh. She will later attend the 10th convocation ceremony of the Guru Ghasidas Central University in Bilaspur. After returning from Bilaspur she will meet tribal delegates at the Governor House in Raipur.

 

About Mahamaya Temple in Ratanpur, Chattisgarh.

 

 

  • Mahamaya Temple is a temple dedicated to Goddess Durga, Mahalakshmi located at Ratanpur of Bilaspur district in Chattisgarh, India. It is one of the 52 Shakti peethas, shrines of Shakti, the divine feminine, spread across India.
  • Built in the 12–13th century, the temple is dedicated to the Goddess Mahamaya. It was built during the reign of Kalachuris of Ratnapura who were the followers of Shiva and Shakti.
  • It is said to be located at the spot where King Ratnadeva had a darshan of goddess Kali. This temple was built in Vikram Samvat in 1552.

 

Architecture

  • The Mahamaya temple is built in Nagara style of architecture facing north. It has four gates and beautiful carvings. It has also been restored by the Archaeological Survey of India.
  • The sanctum and the mandapa are fortified with a fascinating courtyard, which was built in the Maratha period in the late 18th century.
