LIVE-IN RELATIONSHIP A TO BE OUT OF CENTRAL UCC DRAFT DOCUMENT

Why in the news?

The proposed central Uniform Civil Code (UCC) draft is unlikely to address live-in relationships, departing from the Uttarakhand model.

Highlights of the Commission’s Stance and National Narrative:

  • Senior Law Commission members oppose including live-ins in the UCC bill, citing the sanctity of marriage.
  • UCC aims for common family law across religious communities, excluding cohabitation.
What is UCC?

●      Article 44 of the Indian Constitution introduces the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) as a directive principle.

●      UCC aims for uniformity in personal laws across India but is not legally enforceable.

●     Goa and Uttarakhand are  the two states with a UCC, while the rest follow diverse personal laws based on religious affiliations.
